Jazz Musician: Lionel Hampton


One great jazz music performer was Lionel Hampton. Lionel would be a bandleader, actor, jazz vibraphonist and percussionist. He's labored along with other famous jazz music artists for example Buddy Wealthy, Quincy Johnson and Charlie Parker. Lionel was elevated by his grandmother within the south before he moved to Chicago. Within the 1920's he began playing the xylophone and drums. His first instrument was the fife drum.

When he would be a teen he performed drums for that Chicago Defender Newsboy's band. When he resided in California, he performed for that Dixieland Blue-Blowers. In 1936 he was fortunate to satisfy Benny Goodman who found watch him perform. Benny requested him to become listed on his trio which comprised of Benny, Gene Krupa and Teddy Wilson. It had been then re-named the Benny Goodman Quartet. The prior year, Lionel labored with Billie Holiday with Benny's orchestra. Lionel recorded with several groups while still with Benny Goodman, however in 1940 he left to produce their own large band. Lionel's orchestra would be a hit within the 40's and 50's.
